Top 100 Boy Names of 2025
The 100 boy names most often recorded on U.S. Social Security card applications in 2025. Liam leads with 20,818 babies; every rank and count below is the SSA's own figure, not an estimate.
The spread inside the top 100 is steep: #1 Liam was registered 20,818 times, #10 Lucas 10,219 times, and #100 Myles 3,511 times. 20 of the hundred are short names of four letters or fewer (like Liam), while 12 run to eight letters or more (like Theodore). The spread across the top 1,000
The table above stops at #100, but the committed 2025 list for boys runs to rank #1,000, and no count rises as rank falls. The 1,000 names together account for 1,387,686 registered births. The top 10 alone hold 136,355 of those, or 9.8%, and the top 100 hold 649,546, or 46.8%. At the bottom of the list, #1,000 Langston was registered 227 times — #1 Liam's count is 91.7 times Langston's.
| Rank | Name | Babies | Share of #1's count |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Liam | 20,818 | 100.0% |
| #10 | Lucas | 10,219 | 49.1% |
| #100 | Myles | 3,511 | 16.9% |
| #500 | Royce | 606 | 2.9% |
| #1,000 | Langston | 227 | 1.1% |
Because the SSA breaks count ties alphabetically, adjacent ranks can carry identical counts: in the 2025 boys' top 1,000, 287 ranks have exactly the same count as the rank directly above them. The conventions behind rank, count and tie-breaking are set out in the guide to reading ranks and counts.
Which letters 2025 boy names start with
Grouping the 2025 top 1,000 by first letter and summing births gives each of the 26 initials a share. J leads: its 91 names hold 11.2% of all top-1,000 boy births. The five largest initials — J, A, L, M and C — together hold 44.9%; the five smallest — V, X, Y, Q and U — hold 1.3% between them, with U last at 0.1% across 2 names. Counted by names rather than births, A has the most entries in the top 1,000, with 110.
| Share rank | Letter | Names in top 1,000 | Share of births | Top name |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | J | 91 | 11.2% | James (#6, 11,945) |
| #2 | A | 110 | 10.2% | Asher (#28, 7,456) |
| #3 | L | 49 | 8.3% | Liam (#1, 20,818) |
| #4 | M | 72 | 7.6% | Mateo (#8, 11,045) |
| #5 | C | 79 | 7.6% | Cooper (#27, 7,472) |
| #22 | V | 9 | 0.6% | Vincent (#107, 3,267) |
| #23 | X | 2 | 0.3% | Xavier (#108, 3,232) |
| #24 | Y | 10 | 0.3% | Yusuf (#450, 698) |
| #25 | Q | 4 | 0.1% | Quinn (#467, 663) |
| #26 | U | 2 | 0.1% | Uriel (#446, 708) |
The same grouping over each decade snapshot's top 200 shows how the leading initial has stood since 1955. In every snapshot from 1955 to 2015, the initial with the largest share of top-200 boy births was J. The 1955 top 200 spans 19 different initials and the 2015 top 200 spans 22. J's share of top-200 births was 16.2% in 1955 and 17.0% in 2015, with its highest snapshot reading of 22.4% in 1975. Those shares are of a 200-deep list, so they are not directly comparable with the 1,000-deep 2025 figures above; the full letter-by-letter tables for every snapshot are in the guide to first-letter trends since 1955, and the rest of the guides cover the data's other conventions.
Boy names by starting letter
Each letter has its own page with the top 50 boy names beginning with it in the 2025 data — real overall ranks and counts included; 17 of the 26 letter pages reach past rank #1,000.
The #1 boy name in each decade snapshot
The site's decade data is 7 single-year snapshots (1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2015), each carrying the SSA's top 200 boy names for that one year. Across those snapshots, rank #1 belongs to 3 different names: Michael, Jacob and Noah. Michael holds it in 5 of them (1955, 1965, 1975, 1985 and 1995). The count behind rank #1 is also part of the record: Michael was registered 88,355 times in 1955, while Noah was registered 19,680 times in 2015.
| Snapshot | #1 boy name | Babies that year | Rank in 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1950s (1955) | Michael | 88,355 | #21 |
| 1960s (1965) | Michael | 80,992 | #21 |
| 1970s (1975) | Michael | 68,418 | #21 |
| 1980s (1985) | Michael | 64,934 | #21 |
| 1990s (1995) | Michael | 41,409 | #21 |
| 2000s (2005) | Jacob | 25,851 | #43 |
| 2010s (2015) | Noah | 19,680 | #2 |
Read in the other direction, 2025's #1 Liam appears in the top 200 of 2 snapshots: 2005 at #104 with 4,152 babies and 2015 at #2 with 18,410 babies, and is outside the top 200 in the other 5. "Outside the top 200" is the limit of the committed snapshot depth, not a statement that the name went unregistered that year.
Names on both the boy and girl top-1,000 lists
The SSA ranks each sex separately, so the same spelling can hold a rank on both lists. In the 2025 data, 82 names appear in both the boys' and the girls' top 1,000. 12 of them sit inside the boys' top 100, and 36 of the 82 rank higher on the girls' list than on the boys'. The highest-ranked shared name on the boys' side is Noah, #2 for boys with 20,358 babies and #624 for girls with 468. The table lists the first 10 by boys' rank.
| Name | Boys' rank | Boys | Girls' rank | Girls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Noah | #2 | 20,358 | #624 | 468 |
| Ezra | #20 | 8,126 | #834 | 327 |
| Bennett | #40 | 6,268 | #912 | 290 |
| Dylan | #41 | 6,208 | #808 | 338 |
| Carter | #45 | 6,024 | #454 | 679 |
| Logan | #53 | 5,576 | #402 | 775 |
| Rowan | #59 | 5,212 | #249 | 1,240 |
| Angel | #67 | 4,757 | #546 | 551 |
| Cameron | #76 | 4,348 | #487 | 614 |
| August | #81 | 3,958 | #962 | 268 |
Two caveats travel with this list. The SSA does not edit the sex recorded on an application, so the sex recorded for a name may be incorrect, and the data cannot say which entries are affected. And both lists stop at rank #1,000, so a name on one list with a count below the other list's #1,000 is simply outside the committed depth there.
Short, medium and long names across the top 1,000
The generator's length classes, applied to the full 2025 boys' list, split it as 183 short names (4 letters or fewer), 739 medium (5–7 letters) and 78 long (8 or more), counted on the SSA spelling. By births the medium class holds 69.9% of top-1,000 boy births, short 20.9% and long 9.3%. The longest spelling on the list is Christopher at 11 letters (#68, 4,748 babies); the shortest is 2 letters, which 2 names reach, the best-ranked being Bo at #449. The top 10 splits into 2 short, 7 medium and 1 long.
| Length class | Names | Babies | Share of births |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short (4 letters or fewer) | 183 | 289,484 | 20.9% |
| Medium (5–7 letters) | 739 | 969,797 | 69.9% |
| Long (8 or more letters) | 78 | 128,405 | 9.3% |
How to read these numbers
"Babies" is the number of boys born in the U.S. in 2025 whose Social Security card application recorded that exact spelling. Different spellings chart separately — so a sound that is popular across several spellings can sit lower in this table than it feels in real life. Ties are broken alphabetically by the SSA, and names given fewer than 5 times in the year are excluded entirely. Girls' rankings live on the top 100 girl names page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most-registered boy name of 2025?
Liam. The SSA's 2025 file records 20,818 Social Security card applications for boys with that exact spelling, ahead of #2 Noah at 20,358. Rank is position within one sex for one year by descending count, so #1 simply means the largest count on the boys' list.
How many babies received the #1,000 boy name?
227: Langston holds rank #1,000 in the 2025 data. That is the committed depth of this site's latest-year list. Names ranked below it exist in the SSA file but are outside the committed depth, so this page does not quote their ranks or counts. The per-letter pages list each letter's top names with overall ranks, and 17 of the 26 boy letter pages include names ranked past #1,000.
Which first letter accounts for the most 2025 boy births?
J: the 91 top-1,000 boy names starting with J account for 11.2% of all top-1,000 boy births in 2025. Counted by names rather than births, A has the most entries, with 110. The smallest birth share belongs to U, at 0.1% across 2 names. Each letter's page lists that letter's top names with their overall ranks.
Which name was #1 in the most decade snapshots?
Michael, which holds rank #1 for boys in 5 of the 7 snapshot years (1955, 1965, 1975, 1985 and 1995). In the 2025 data it ranks #21. Each decade is a single-year snapshot of the top 200, not an average across ten years.
Are any names on both the boy and girl lists?
Yes. 82 names appear in both the boys' and girls' 2025 top 1,000, led on the boys' side by Noah (#2 for boys, #624 for girls). The SSA ranks each sex separately, so a shared name has two independent ranks and two independent counts, and the SSA does not edit the sex recorded on an application.
Why is a name missing from these tables?
Two reasons, both structural. The SSA excludes any name given to fewer than 5 babies of one sex in a year, so absence is not proof a name went unused. And this page stops at rank #1,000 (Langston, 227 babies); a name registered fewer times than that in 2025 is outside the committed depth. Spelling variants are also separate entries with separate ranks.
Source: every name, rank, and count on this page comes from the U.S. Social Security Administration's national baby-names dataset (2025 data, from Social Security card applications). It is public-domain U.S. government data; names given fewer than 5 times in a year are excluded by the SSA, spelling variants are counted separately, and the data covers U.S. births only. Full caveats on the methodology page.
